To "step up" my appearance!
Below is part one of this process. If you have any goals to share, consider linking up with myself, Lori and Meghan!

Since my husband is a photographer (He's seriously a genius, check him out here!), he works with make-up artists and hairstylists regularly. When he heard that I was looking to expand my knowledge of make-up, and really figure out what works best for me, he suggested that I work with the lovely Hillary Fenton. Hillary agreed to take me shopping and teach me how to properly apply my new purchases, and it was honestly one of the coolest experiences I've had in a long time!
(A little backstory: Before meeting with Hillary, I cared as much about make-up as I did about professional sports. In other words, very little. On a typical day, I wear powder, blush, eyeshadow, & mascara. I am really fair-skinned, so I was always hesitant about wearing too much. Although, sometimes on the weekends, I think I'm a little too liberal with the eyeshadow. And I bought everything at Target. My collection? Paltry at best.)
While I was excited about meeting with a professional, I was also super nervous, as I have very little knowledge for someone as old as I am. However, when I met Hillary, I was instantly put at ease. She was a DOLL - so sweet and talkative. Also, the girl has had quite the career - just last week, she did Cindy Crawford and Vince Vaughn's make-up! How cool is that???
Hillary took me to Bloomingdale's and Sephora, and as we selected items that worked for me, she also instructed me on proper application. I learned SO much - my old eyeshadow wasn't super flattering. Plus, there are better ways to apply mascara! Who knew?!?!?!
After a few hours and a new face, I walked away with the following:
* Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer
* Laura Mercier "Secret Camouflage" concealer
* Benefit Magic Ink Liquid Eyeliner
* Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow / Liner in Tattletale
* Beneft Hoola Bronzer
* Benefit Cha-Cha Tint (cream blush)
* NARS lip pencils (I can't remember the two colors)
* Cadaulie Skin Care Set (Mine was actually cheaper, but it's similar to this set. I had no idea my skin was so dry until I met Hillary!)
Now, keep in mind that before this, I only purchased Cover Girl and Maybelline products, so spending this much on make-up was certainly difficult. And I don't know if I will continue to use all of these products. However, I have to say that since last Monday, I've noticed a HUGE difference in my skin moisture. Also, many people have commented that I look different, and according to my husband, my make-up is much "cleaner".

(And yes, I did take really nice pictures with my regular camera, but of course, they disappeared on me. So you're stuck with a scary iPhone photo. Now, what to do about that nose???)
Are you obsessed with make-up? What are some of your favorite products???
(This was one of my summer goals. Consider sharing yours and link up below!)
That's actually a really a fun goal!!
ReplyDeleteI looove Benefit, my friends works for them and always gets me amazing gifts from there, I love the tints the most :)
ReplyDeleteyour eyes are seriously gorgeous, girl. i know next to nothing about make up. and i could really use a friend like that... can you send her my way? please?
ReplyDeleteI love this goal! I'm sure it was very difficult to spend that much on makeup, but you'll be surprised how long that all lasts! I really want to try some of those Benefit products.
ReplyDeleteLaura Mercier and Nars have never let me down.
ReplyDeleteYour eyes look great!!!
ReplyDeleteNow that is a fun goal, and how cool you got to hang out with a makeup artist! I bet you learned so much!
ReplyDeleteYou look so pretty! This is definitely a goal of mine too, to get a makeover and then buy all (or most) of the products. I did it once before right before I started my first job out of college and it was seriously such a great investment, but when I ran out I just copied the look w/ Maybelline and Covergirl type brands! It's especially awesome that she showed you how to use everything- I think that's where I got stuck! (and your nose is just perfect!)
ReplyDeleteAwwww, SO PRETTY Meghan!! Just gorgeous :-) The new makeup look looks great on ya!
ReplyDeleteYou look great! Even if it is an iPhone photo ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt looks really clean, not like you have makeup on, at all.
Gorgeous gorgeous! It's amazing how something so small can make us feel better =)
I LOVE MAKEUP. Sephora is one of my favorite places on earth, though it is extremely dangerous for me! It's so easy for me to spend so much money in there, and it goes so quick.
ReplyDeleteI have used a sample of the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and I really really loved it. I can't afford it on the regular, though, so I've been using elf's tinted moisturizer--$3 at Target, and I like it!
Urban Decay's pen eyeliner is pretty awesome--it's like a cross between liquid and not liquid. My very favorite foundation is Dior's Airflash but it's SO EXPENSIVE so I normally use Bare Minerals.
Keep us posted on how you're liking everything & any new finds!
I think your nose is cute! :)
ReplyDeleteI tried Laura Mercier once and loved it, but didn't buy any. Mine is mostly Smashbox. I probably need the "applying" tutorial, though!
You look great!
dang girl!!!! you got some awesome stuff!! and you look gorgeous wearing it! :)
ReplyDeleteI am in the same boat as you. I barely wear any makeup and don't even know where to start. What a fun goal. Your makeup looks really good in the picture!
ReplyDeleteEeeee new makeup is so fun! You look gorge!!
ReplyDeleteSo so so fun! I'm not "obsessed" per se, but I have a couple high-end products I love. I swear by NARS or MAC blush and Urban Decay eyeshadows (particularly the NAKED palette). Everything else I've found does the trick from the grocery store :)
ReplyDeleteAw, I can't wait to post about this! I'm kinda going thru a phase to improve myself as well (ditched the glasses and got some contacts!) And right now I'm trying out some makeup and messing around with my sister's stuff. She let's me, by the way, because as she sees it, I'm "FINALLY" using makeup. 23yearsold and I've only recently liked using eyeliner haha.
ReplyDeleteYou look so pretty!! I don't really use makeup at all, I just don't have the patience for it!
ReplyDeleteI have been eyeing Cha Cha Tint for a long time but then decide not to get it when I found an tube of orange cream blush from Korea. It has the same outcome so I thought I would save myself some money. I do love NARS products.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to try Maybelline's BB Cream and Revlon's Just Bitten Kissable Balm. This summer, I am going the cheap route.
Love how your eyes sparkle. :D hehe. I go with whatever works best for my skin at any time. And this changes over the years, so I don't use the same products. BaseEssentials is what I use as eyeshadow lately...loving it. :D
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I love & use to many products!
ReplyDeleteI'm also fair skinned and have blue eyes, I love makeup! So if you have any questions about that ask! You have lovely red hair and I think if you have freckles don't cover them up too much :)
ReplyDeleteI'll check out the prodicts you recommended!

You look AWESOME! My favorite is Bare Minerals; it goes on completely clean and no one can tell that I have make up on. Their eye make up is a bit dusty/easy to come off for me, but their blush is fabulous. Added bonus: Their powder has SPF, which means double coverage with my oil of olay face moisturizer!
ReplyDeleteI pretty much use the same make up every day - L'Oreal True Match foundation, eye shadow (always dark even at the office which would prob make Hillary cringe, but with my Asian shaped eyes I feel like my eyes look "weird" without it!), eye liner, mascara and I never wear lipstick or lip gloss because I'm obsessed with Carmex.
ReplyDeleteI don't care at all about what brand names or kind of make up I use. Honestly I buy whatever is on sale or the cheapest!! haha Like you pre-Hillary I buy most of my cosmetics at Target or Walgreens. So how fun to go with a professional! I would love to see what she would have suggested for me. And I'm pretty obsessed with celebs so I'd have so many questions to ask her about which star's make up she's done! haha)
You look gorgeous!!! I LOVE the way the liquid eyeliner makes your blue eyes just pop! And your skin just looks flawless! Of course you are always beautiful, but I agree - there's something different about you in this photo! I really think it's the eyeliner! Love it!
