If you follow me on the Twit, then you may have seen my complaints about our lack of air conditioning this past week. Let's just say that this past week was NOT the most opportune time to lose our precious A/C, as Chicago was met with blasting temperatures. However, it certainly threw my life into an upheaval (I'm such a drama queen), so I thought I'd share our experiences.
Tuesday, 7/17 - The A/C officially goes out in the late evening.
Wednesday, 7/18 - OMFG, it's hot. I decide to get creative with my day (the hubs went straight to work) in order to avoid our little hell.
* Morning run along the lake (which was actually cooler than our place)
* Core Sculpt class
* MOVIES! Yes, ladies and gents, I went to the movies all by myself like a big girl to see "To Rome With Love", the new Woody Allen film. Like most of his movies, it was equal parts lovely and confusing.
* Dinner. At a BAR. You know you're suffering from a #firstworldproblem when you have to sit in a bar and drink martinis to cool off...
(I suppose I can take the heat if THIS is my morning run view!)
(A quiet morning on the harbor...)
(I decided to explore River East, complete with views of the NBC tower.)
Friday, 7/20 - We officially have four fans going, and the bedroom was actually quite comfortable. Sure, I found yet another coffee shop (Jupiter Outpost in the West Loop), but I no longer wanted to stab someone.
Saturday, 7/21 - From a six mile run to pilates in the park, a rooftop pool party and sushi with friends, I did a pretty good job of avoiding the apartment.
(My view at the pool party? Besides my pasty white legs? An old dude who danced by himself in the pool.)
Sunday, 7/22 - Ugh. Hell on earth, people. The temperatures increased significantly, and I spent most of the day pretty cranky - not only did people keep disappointing me, but it was SO.DAMN.HOT.
(This is pretty much how I felt, all day long.)
Monday, 7/23 - To escape the 100 degree temps, I worked out twice and the hubs and I went to see "The Dark Knight Rises" (SO stupid, btw).
Tuesday, 7/24 - REDEMPTION DAY! We finally had our A/C fixed, and we have some beautiful, sparkling new units at our disposal! WOO HOO!
And even though we have A/C? I am at a coffee shop. Again. Go figure.
Sigh. Have you ever been without a modern convenience, like A/C?
wow meg i feel horrible for you. should have gotten on a train and headed to the 'burbs to hang out with me and get COLD drinks ;) at least you were able to be creative with your day when avoiding your apartment! xo
ReplyDeleteI seriously feel for you, being without A/C during the hottest months of the year is the pits, literally! So glad for y'all that it's finally fixed! I'm sure your both so relieved!
ReplyDeleteThis week the main unit in our house went out too! And I live in Florida where it is more than hot and humid! The hardest part was figuring out what to do for dinner for the family because we didn't want to turn on the stove or oven! So glad to be back up and running with air again!

ReplyDelete"firstworldproblems" - I love that, it must be really hard having to go out for dinner;) In Denmark it's not all that common having an A/C (mostly just in cars), but then again our summers aren't that hot, and when it finally gets warm in only lasts a few days, so everyone enjoys the sun when its finally here. Glad you got your A/C back though:)

ReplyDeleteYikes! Glad you are back to living like a queen with a fixed A/C! I'm VERY grateful that we have A/C in our apartment.
ReplyDeleteWhen I lived with a friend of mine a few years ago, we rented a house. The AC went out in August (worst month ever in GA) and then the heat went out in the winter. It sucked, but thankfully our landlord replaced the AC unit!

ReplyDeleteOur A/C unit broke the day before 4th of July this year and I'm sure you recall how hot that week was up here in Illinois! With a toddler and a senior citizen staying in out house, we needed it back on asap and most places were booked until Thursday due to the holiday. We found someone that was able to come out within a few hours and fixed it but it did cost a pretty penny! But it was good to have it back on!
Not sure if you remember the big storm in Northern Illinois back in 2003 - did some major damage around Rockford and my parent's house was without power for nearly a week (as was a good chunk of the city!) it was horrible... my ex and I and my friend slept in the basement since it was coolest down there since we were in town for the holiday - I remember we spent one day at Old Chicago and then went to antique shops just to get out of the heat. It was horrible!
Bless your heart! Your misery made for a great blog post, though. ;) Our a/c went out last summer at about this time, right here in Sweet HOT Alabama, & it was unbearable...We took both kids (& My Little Man was all of about a month old) to work w/ my husband, so we could escape the heat at home.
