Top 5 Thursdays - Like Father, Like Daughter

If you know me and my family, you are well aware of the fact that I am exactly like my father.  We're both organized, extroverted red heads.  We are curious, ask lots of questions, and demand instant answers.  And physically?  We're built exactly the same.  So thanks, Dad, for those muscular legs...

In all seriousness, my dad is an amazing, charming person, and I am proud to "take after him".  One of the many similarities we share is a taste in music.  I swear, when iTunes suggests music for me, I really think they imagine me as a 60 year old man (not that my father is 60 or anything...ha!).  So, when people find out that I have a very strong interest in "classic rock" and that one of my favorite XM radio stations is the "Vinyl" channel, they're often surprised.

Therefore, I thought it might be fun to devote this week's Top 5 list to my "Top 5 Favorite Oldies"!

P.S.  It was REALLY hard to narrow this list down and I know I forgot some super amazing songs.  Also, my husband shot a few of my ideas down.  For instance, he said that "Oh Sherrie" by Steve Perry didn't count as an oldie.  I beg to differ...

My "Honorable Mention" - "Summer Breeze by Seals & Crofts (1972)

I don't know what it is about this song, but it's light and catchy.  I remember listening to this at a friend's house growing up.  Also, there is a great scene in the very obscure television show "Ed" that features this song, and it was that show that reminded me how great this song really is.

5.)  "Day After Day" by Badfinger (1971)

If you don't know this song, PLEASE PRESS PLAY!  I bet you've either heard it before or you'll end up loving it.  It's beautiful.

4.) "Sister Golden Hair" by America (1975)

Seriously.  What is it with me and easy listening from the 70's???  I swear, I do love cool bands, too...

3.) "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac (1977)

I totes own this album on vinyl. WORD.

2.) "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys (1966)

Not only is this song amazing, but the entire album (Pet Sounds) is ridiculous!

1.) "Back in the USSR" by The Beatles (1968)

Where do I even begin??? I pretty much love anything Beatles, so I figured I'd post a less popular song.  In my mind, they can do no wrong.

Do you share a taste in music with your dad?  Are you a fan of the oldies?  If so, link up and play along!

  7. oh I love your top 3, especially God nly Knows, its one of Thomas's favourite songs and he put it on one of his first CD's for me :) yeay!

My favourite oldie is Mr Blue Sky by ELO, it makes me so happy and always reminds me of my Dad and my Uncle. I love this list!

Its scary how much my Dad influenced my taste in music yet not my sisters at all, even though we were always together listening to the same things, odd huh

  8. Great list! I went a little more old school with mine. I love how most of us inherit this love for oldies/classic rock from our fathers. :) I'm such a daddy's girl!

We should do an all Beatles link-up sometime! Heck, it'd be hard to even narrow THAT list down to 5 too!

And "Go Your Own Way" always makes me think of Rock Band 3!

  10. Oh wow! "Summer Breeze" is defintiely a Dad and me song too! Old tunes resonate with both of us.

Great picks! Most folks my age would not know any of these, except for the Beatles song maybe.

Dad and I have seen Hall & Oats, Paul Simon and the Moody Blues in concert together.

  11. Oh man, how much do I love this post??? I want to do my own, although I can't access videos/youtube at school so I don't know if I can swing it. I looooooved reading your list, and I'm just like my dad, too! We look alike, act alike, share interests, ailments, senses of humor, etc. :) He's one of my favorite people in the world!

Funny enough, I draw a serious line between "oldies" and "classic rock," and I LOVE the latter while wanting nothing to do with the former. Weird, right?? I'm right there with you on some of these, though--Sister Golden Hair is one of my favorite songs ever, and is my #2 go-to karaoke song (after Allman Brothers' Ramblin' Man). There's probably be more southern rock on my list (Allman Bros, Doobie Bros, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc), though I have lots of love in my heart for Rolling Stones, CCR, Neil Young, etc . . . . my very favorite genre!

    <3 this topic!!!

  12. I just got done doing my Top 5 and I have to thank you for the trip down memory lane :) It brought back so many good memories of my childhood while I tried to limit it down to just 5 songs! Such a fun topic! :) And thanks for the songs on your list, which I listened to while working at my desk earlier today! :) LOVE 5, 4 and 2 SO much! :)

  14. Awww, my dad's a red head and I was born a ginger too, but it changed to blonde! We're very alike in many areas and I'd say half of his music. He still likes alternative band that no one listens to anymore (linkin park, nickleback, incubus). Love your choices much more so!

  15. Fun! My dad and I share a love for The Stones, Zepelin, and Tom Petty :)

  16. LOVE your choices!!! :) Especially the Beatles! Surprisingly I did my top 5 (6) without any Beatles songs! Day after Day is such a great song. And Fleetwood Mac on vinyl?! Legit!
