His & Hers: The Travel Edition.

Hiiiiii!  Oh, how I've missed everyone!  The hubs and I are back from our amazing trip to NYC/Ithaca.  From running in Central Park, to the MoMA, to amazing meals and constant exploring, my love for NYC still holds firm.  I'm not sure how/when I will be able to re-cap the trip on the blog, as I am leaving once again on Wednesday for three days for a workshop.  Ugh.  Anyway, as I settle in and organize my thoughts (and catch up with your blogs!), I figured it would be appropriate to do a little post on travel habits.  You see, my husband and I are very different in many ways, and travel is no exception.  For instance:

Packing:

travel
(weheartit)

I am in charge of packing all of our clothes and toiletries.  I also have everything ready the night before, sometimes two days before.

Husband packs up his computer and last minute items five minutes before we're supposed to leave.

Coffee:

I like to wait until we're all checked in at the airport to grab my morning Starbucks (although the photo is from Caribou.  You get the point.)

Husband likes his Starbucks right away, and then has to carry his hot drink AND his luggage to the airport.

Security:

My purse is cleared of unnecessary items and my plastic bag with 3 oz. liquids is always ready to go the night before.

Husband usually gets flagged by security for some reason.

Pre-Flight Food:

I love my Potbelly.

Husband loves his McDonald's.

Pre-Flight Mentality:

I get stressed to the max, regardless of my preparation.  When people move too slowly through security, I get super impatient.  I never feel fully relaxed until we're sitting at the gate.

Husband is cool as a cucumber, no matter what happens.  Especially when a cab in upstate New York gets lost, and the trip ends up costing $120.

Organization:

I generally type up a five-page itinerary, with our trip organized to the minute.

Husband prefers to just show up in a city and explore!

Unpacking:

Whether it's at the hotel or when we get home, the first thing I like to do is unpack.

Husband doesn't have to worry about any of this.  See above.

The one thing we do have in common?  When we return from a trip, we order Chinese food, watch a movie and snuggle on the couch.  After I've unpacked, of course.

Sometimes, I think my husband has the right idea.  How do you like to travel?

  1. I am JUST like you. I have to be organized and precise. I make spreadsheets and everything. I am way over prepared but if I'm not, I feel like the trip is going to spiral out of control. :)

I'm glad you had a great trip! Ithaca is gorge-ous...:)

  3. I'm always packed ahead of time! And, I'm always stressed until we're sitting at the gate. I know we can't miss our flight that way!

  6. Hmm.. I definitely think I'm a mixture of both of you when it comes to traveling. I'm a ball of stress, but I'm very last-minute and spontaneous.. I can't plan. Planning = time for me to talk myself out of something or worry it might go wrong, lol. Glad you had a good trip!

  7. That is such a beautifully packed suitcase!

And I am much more so like you-especially when it comes to moving through the airport. Before I left for France last summer, I was at the airport five hours early. You know, just incase anything were to come up. I am always anxious something will happen, and I'll miss my flight and subsequently my fabulous trip!

  8. I guess I'm like you, and your husband, well he reminds me of my husband, except that my husband is usually the one doing the itinerary and I just show up!

  9. I like to be very organized but my fiance is VERY organized when it comes to traveling. He travels a lot for work so he's definitely the airport pro!

  10. It drives me nuts that hubs waits until the last minute to pack! I should just start packing for him.

  11. Oh my goodness, Meghan, I am awestruck at your organization and ultra-preparedness! I am just like your husband (except no one packs for me, ha). I always pack at the very last minute (late night the night before, or sometimes in the morning before my flight!). I am almost always running late to the airport and usually arrive just in time to check bags. I never ever type up itineraries (I don't even print out my boarding pass--just hand over my ID at the airport and they give me one). At best, I scribble a list of things to pack on a piece of notebook paper mere hours before I have to leave for the airport. ;)

I've never once but anything in a 3 oz bottle, and yet they don't seem to notice/haven't ever confiscated anything.

Coffee is crucial. We have that in common. ;)

  12. Glad to hear you had an amazing time in NYC! I can't wait to see photos and hear about your adventures! I'm a similar traveler to you (my husband and I leave on Friday for Portland, Oregon, and I'm already getting the will-I-make-the-flight gitters!!)

  15. I am a bit of both of you! I like packing way in advance, and having an itinerary! But I never unpack until the first night when we're about to go to bed! Oh, I also make Timmy pack his own stuff, but I am in charge of all the toiletries!

  17. $120?! WTH? And THEY got lost? Not cool. Stupid taxi drivers ugh! I'm with you on packing. I freak out and am ready to go days, if not a week in advance.

Glad you had a great trip!

  19. I'm you. Minus the unpacking. I always leave the bag packed near the door for at least a few days. But it's probably good that y'all are opposite in the mentality. Tim and I both are anxious and we end up getting short with each other until we're settled at the gate.

    Sorry bout that cab...yikes.
