Pop2K, on the other hand, plays early 2000's pop music, such as pre-shaved head, cray-cray Britney Spears ("Oops! I Did It Again"), Destiny's Child ("Say My Name"), 'NSync ("It's Gonna Be Me"), etc. And THIS, my friends, reminds me of the tail-end of my college years. And admittedly, I've done a lot of thinking lately about "College Meghan" and "Current Meghan". And WOW, are there some differences. Physically, I no longer have blonde hair, and am definitely a good 15-20 pounds lighter than I was in 2000. These days, my weekends consist of going to bed at 9:00 on Friday evenings, and I no longer consider anything that comes in a can a quality beverage.

(Umm, yuck. I seriously used to love places like this...)
But there ARE some things I miss about my college years, like...
5.) The fact that eating Taco Bell at 10:00 a.m. on a Sunday was socially acceptable.

4.) That sometimes, a box of wine and a game of Scrabble on a Tuesday night was the perfect way to study for an exam. This is really a metaphor for living in the moment and embracing opportunities to make new friends.
3.) Sharing closets with 20, 30, 40+ other women. (Stephanie, I totally miss your tank tops!)
2.) My sisters. Yes, I was in a sorority. And I loved every minute of it. I was very active, and served as Philanthropy Coordinator, Vice-President of Standards (If you knew me then, you're STILL mesmerized by this), Social Chair, and Nominating Committee Chair. This organization made me a better person. They embraced me for who I was, faults and all, and continue to do so to this day. Never have I seen such a diverse group of women act with such grace and integrity on a daily basis.
1.) Freedom! College was a time where I was able to stay up until 3:00 a.m. listening to music with a good friend, treat myself to a warm cookie at the student union in the middle of the afternoon, go for a long run, dance the night away at a party, take a random road trip to Indianapolis and stalk 'NSync, etc. I am sure many of you were able to do things without any regard to lack of sleep, money or food:)
While my college years were a blast, I am not sure I care to relive the personal identity crisis I suffered, or the heartbreak, or the hangovers. But in those moments, there were many lessons I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Like the fact that Taco Bell is good at any hour of the day.
What do you miss about your college years?

I can't think of Soldier Field without remembering when we tried to bribe the security guard to let us in so we could go to the bathroom. South Shore Line + Mike's Hard Lemonade (really?!) = Bad idea.

ReplyDeleteHow about rolling down a giant hill in the dark just because someone told you to? Or dressing up ridiculously and dancing on the Chapel steps in the spirit of Spring Weekend? Fun times :)
Staying out til 5 am and still managing to show up on time to sing in the choir Sunday morning (albeit in the same black pants I wore the night before...)
ReplyDeleteTaco Bell. Midday naps. Road trips. My roomies.
I don't miss the extra 20 pounds, though...
I miss freedom too---not having a structured work schedule..being able to go out almost every night.
ReplyDeleteI miss football games and the atmosphere of a college campus.
I desperately want to move back to Knoxville!
I miss so much about college, but mostly the relaxed schedule. Midday naps? Check. Sleeping in every Friday? Check. Staying up until one, knowing I'd still get 7 hours of sleep? Check.
ReplyDeleteI'm linking up today!
P.S. Hoot hoot to VPS! ;)
This post makes me miss college!
ReplyDeleteI love you even more for mentioning *NSYNC, not once, but twice in this post! Seriously, we were meant to be friends.
Well I'm still technically in college but really... I don't miss anything from my "normal" college days. Oooh, except the pizza place that was across the street from my dorm, YUM.
ReplyDeleteI don't necessarily miss much about college. I loved the friends I made (but I still have them), I loved the opportunities I got (studying in Guatemala and Cuba, going to the UN, etc.), and I love the person college made me (entered college with the lowest self esteem and complete hatred of myself and exited the exact opposite), but I didn't really have a true college experience. I pretty much worked all the time and never had time for parties or Taco Bell or anything fun. However, I wouldn't change it for the world - college made me who I am today and I kinda like that person.
ReplyDeleteYES to #1, 3, 5! I really miss sharing clothes!
ReplyDeleteWow, Meghan, you've really brought me back! I miss the best sub sandwiches in the world, ISS open until 3am! Also...living with girl roommates, making my class/work schedule around "The Price is Right," quarter-draft night, and black bar pants! Mad props to Western Illinois and Macomb!
ReplyDeleteI miss not having the same kind of responsibilities I have now, but some of my life is still the same. I still get to be goofy and make art all day. :)
ReplyDeleteI miss going out to bars with my friends and not hating every single person there. Now college students annoy me. 21 year old Salt would have annoyed 33 year old Salt SO much.
We are so similar it scares me...like seriously we are the same. Where did you go to college? P.S. I was also Philanthropy chair!
ReplyDeleteMy college life was full of studying really hard to get straight As, working 4 jobs at a time, and going to very few parties. Seriously.
ReplyDeleteBut I loved the time I spent there and made the best friends! :)
I miss college sooooo much!!! For all the reasons you listed (except I wasn't in a sorority). I miss that feeling that anything was possible. That my next big adventure was just around the corner. The freedom to just take off whenever I felt like it. And specifically this week - I miss spring break!!!!! Such good times :)
ReplyDeleteI miss college SO MUCH. Really, almost all of it. Those four years are literally the only time in your life where you get lots of freedom & independence without the responsibility. I miss living in a dorm room with my best friend, staying up all night goofing off & studying intermittently, the excitement of going out to bars and hoping to meet a fine fellow. :) I miss being able to go to class without having had much sleep and it being fine (whereas now, it's definitely not "fine" if I come to work with only a couple hours of sleep). Mostly, I miss feeling YOUNG!
ReplyDeleteAll of it. I just get so incredibly nostalgic when I think about college. I went back to my college (Tulane) in the fall, and was so envious of all the students wandering around campus; I wanted to shout out "you have no idea how lucky you are!"
Also, I'm deeply impressed that you weigh LESS now than you did then! I find that my metabolism gets slower with age. :|
xoxoxo
I miss everything about college. I miss that all my friends lived within 10 minutes of each other and we just needed to text each other to make random lunvh or dinner plans. I miss, like you, randomly deciding one night to stay up until 3:00 in the morning and another to go to bed at 9. I miss being an adult without the responsibilities. Oh I love this post. (And I love that this braid has a section for tacos, because my FAVORITE place to eat in college was a place called Willy's that was tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. My friends and I called it William's Burrito Palace...yummm)!
ReplyDeleteStill in it babes! Now that I'm married, I get to enjoy freedom that I didn't have when living with my family which is nice.
ReplyDeleteI have never really been big on the partying, so the beer pong table is yucky to me and I'm in college.
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
I miss those parties that came out of nowhere, even on weekdays, because you could always take the next day off.
ReplyDeleteAnd miss Sunday movies nights... I don't know how I could afford going to the movies every Sunday with a group of people from the dorm, but I did and I loved it:)
How appropos -- I was just looking at college facebook albums last night, filled with nostalgia. I miss having all of my favorite people in the same city!!! Now we're scattered around the whole world, and that's a bummer (but great reason for traveling).
ReplyDeleteI know I don't miss the studying, LOL! But, I did love the relaxed mindset days!
ReplyDeleteActually I'm still in college. . . and this made me sort of happy that I'm still there. I'm going to miss pancakes at all hours of the day as well.
ReplyDeletewhat a great post!
ReplyDeletei can relate to parts of it because i have to say i truly love my working life right now.
i miss parts of university (we call it that in canada because there is a difference btwn the college and university system here...whatevs.)
i miss all the new and fascinating people (as well as the never ending supply of cute boys) that i would meet day and day out.
i miss being able to stay up until 4am and still wake up for an 8am class.
i miss my meal card. walking into the cafeteria and swiping my card was so much more fun than having to plan out meals for the week and grocery shop (something i am still struggling with.)
i do remember that i was i itching to get out of school about two years in but i still feel a little nostalgic!
More than anything, I miss being able to stay up late and still function the next day. I also miss being able to fall asleep and stay asleep. I miss the luxury of living at home and not paying any bills. Being an adult has its moments, but some of it sucks.
ReplyDelete#1 definitely! No worries about getting someone to watch the dude so I could go out to dinner!
ReplyDeleteI love this post so much! I'm only about 3 months removed from my college years (well, graduate school doesn't really count because it wasn't fun haha, but anyway), but I definitely have mixed nostalgic feelings about my undergrad years! The boys...the booze...the embarrassing stories...whew. I miss changing outfits in my dorm room mid-day just because I felt like it. I miss boba tea from the student union. I miss being in classes full of kids older than me! There's a lot I loved about campus life :)
ReplyDeleteNowadays, I'm perfectly happy to sit on the couch on Saturday night and eat pizza with my future husband. Oh, how things change!
I definitely miss sorority things. I also miss the late nights and eating anything at any hour!
ReplyDeletei am FINALLY getting with the program and following you! i miss college so much! i went to the unviersity of alabama so greek life was huge and of course i was in one as well and absolutely loved it. i miss having my BEST friends all at an arms reach. sad!
ReplyDeleteNew follower! Can't wait to participate in Top 5 Thursday! :)
ReplyDeleteFor me, it's the pressure. It's one of those rare things that you hate when you experience it, but you miss when it's all gone. Take exams for example. Resourcefulness suddenly runs in your blood when you face quizzes with no studying. LOL! And when you pass the test with flying colors, it's like you're the President of everything. Ha ha!
ReplyDeleteOh, gosh. Wow. You and N'Sync.
ReplyDeleteI agree with missing the freedom-living in the bubble. Sometimes it would be nice to get that back!
