Why bother mentioning this cheesy 80's song? Because I recently found out that Olivia Newton-John is run/walking the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon in Indianapolis, and that happens to me my first post-pregnancy half-marathon. SO, this pop culture/celebrity obsessed new mama is definitely going to work to find her and attract her attention. Thanks to Sally, the idea was created to wear "Let's Get Physical" shirts and sweatbands for the race. DONE and DONE.
Anywho, I thought I'd hold myself accountable and ask for training tips by recapping each week. Since I am trying to balance training with going back to work and taking care of the little lady, I figured that these recaps would hold me accountable.
For those who actually care, my half-marathon is on Satuday, May 3rd. I've run this half three times - I finished twice (2:11 and 2:03), and I stopped after 9 miles last year since I was pregnant. I've also run the 5K. I'm following the Hal Higdon Novice 2 12-week training plan. My goal is simple: to finish.
(What the training plan called for is in black. What I actually did is in blue.)
Monday: Rest Day (I actually took a rest day, too, since I had taken a Shred415 class on Sunday and was still super sore from it.)
Tuesday: 3 miles (3 miles at a 9:49 pace)
Wednesday: 3 miles (2 miles at a 10:54 pace. I attempted a speed workout from Anne but was cut short due to a fussy baby.)
Thursday: 3 miles (3 miles at a 10:22 pace)
Friday: Rest (60 minute Pure Barre class)
Saturday: 4 mile "long run" (4 miles at a 10:15 pace)
Overall, I feel pretty great. My runs have been much slower than past years, but since my only goal is to finish, and I want to make sure I return to running in a smart, healthy way, I am working on increasing distance, and not speed. I've suffered my fair share of injuries in the past, and my physical therapist (always the same one - Hi, Molly!) said that one of the most common causes of injury for runners is increasing speed AND distance at the same time (along with a weak core).
Are you training for any races?
You are so awesome for not only getting back into the swing of your training but also running in the same race as Olivia Newton John. So jealous. Haha!!!!
ReplyDeleteWHA?! ONJ is going to be in Indianapolis?! That is awesome! Great training this week, girl. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat job!! My next goal race is the Shamrock Shuffle, but I actually am trying to decide which half I'll do later this spring - that Indy Mini Marathon is on my list - Cincinnati and Wisconsin are also the same weekend, so I just need to decide already! Olivia Newton John might just push me to that one lol.
ReplyDeleteI worked out for the first time in 3 weeks after being horrendously ill so I take that as a win :) does bridal bootcamp training count?
ReplyDeleteCool! You MUST find her! I love that race. Next race for me is the Lincoln Presidential Half. Then Flying Pig.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone NOT know that song or video?! You definitely need to track her down, that's awesome.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a really good week! Doing too much too fast does seem to pretty much guarantee injury, so I think you're smart to mainly focus on distance this time around.
Ahh! Love the idea to wear those shirts for the race! I should download that song to play at my class tonight!
ReplyDeleteI am so happy to hear you are focusing on endurance/distance and not speed, because that IS a major stressor on the body, especially when are you are getting back at it.
My half marathon is the same day as yours! Woo hoo! I am pacing someone, so just training for that :)
You're running my pace- keep it up and I'll be your training buddy for ZOOMA!!!!
ReplyDeleteYay! I'll be running with Olivia Newton John! So cool.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting to get back at it! I've heard great things about that race, too. Good luck with your training!
ReplyDeleteOhhhh Oliva Newton John?? That's awesome!! And yes.. you know I'm always training for a race. :)
ReplyDeleteNicely done! I doubt I'll ever be a runner - I kind of hate it. But I do love my workouts now and plan to keep them up! I'm already seeing some toning and weight loss, which is awesome!
ReplyDeletewhoo hoo! you rock chica! Way to go!
ReplyDeleteooohh... good luck! My training for the Michelob Chicago 13.1 starts in March... sometime... I should probably finalize those plans, huh? :)
ReplyDeleteA girl after my own heart...in so many ways! I miss Indy (my hometown) so much. This post makes me want to take a long weekend there.
ReplyDeleteYou did awesome this week! And that's really fun that Olivia Newton-John is going to be there, I hope you see her!
ReplyDeleteGo girl! You can do it!
ReplyDeleteOh and ps. I can't wait to see you take a pic with Olivia!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great start. Did you go straight to 3 miles, and just stay slow? It's been so long since I've run, so I'm kind of nervous. My plan for this summer is slow-- 5k, 8k,10k. I'll do one per month for a pretty easy build up. I can't wait to seriously break a sweat again!
ReplyDeleteYou rock at running! Love that video and song!
