Top 5 Thursdays - Guilty Aversions

This morning as I was driving to work, I heard something fascinating on the radio.  The DJ mentioned that we often talk about our "guilty pleasures" in life.  That definitely struck a chord with me, as I have many: The "Real Housewives" franchise (or pretty much anything on Bravo), anything Tori Spelling (which, yes, includes the amazing Lifetime movie "Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?"), trips to Starbucks (even though I am no longer allowed due to our new espresso machine - sometimes I have both!), and of course, US Weekly.  However, the DJ mentioned that he wanted to discuss "guilty aversions", or rather, things that we are embarrassed to admit we DON'T like.

And so, here you go.  My Top 5 Guilty Aversions.

5.) Professional Sports.  I am sure this doesn't come as a surprise to many, especially since I've discussed my dread for participating in a fantasy football league this year, but professional sports = UGH.  They bore me to tears, and I suppose that sometimes, I feel as if I SHOULD like them, simply because it would make me THAT girl - the cool, fun, laidback girl who can enjoy an afternoon at Wrigley Field and gets excited when the Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup.  I mean, my city has FIVE professional sports teams.  And, I am a pretty athletic gal and have played sports my entire life.  FAIL.

4.) Manicures.  I HATE them, but I will get pedicures all day long.  Why?  Well, I suppose it's because I hate long nails.  And I ALWAYS smear manicures no matter what I do.  Plus, and I know this sounds weird, but I hate taking off my wedding rings if I don't have to.  My hands are short, stubby, and somewhat manly, and I guess I feel silly with beautifully painted nails.

P.S.  I tried to take a picture of my hands for you, since you saw my feet in the last post.  Umm.  They do not photograph well.

3.) Pink Floyd.  I know they're supposed to be one of the greatest bands of all time, but quite honestly, they freak me out.  There's something creepy about faceless children (in the video for "The Wall").  Plus, at the beginning of the song, there's dialogue about not eating pudding.  Or is it meat? AND, there is one song with cash register sounds at the beginning.  Pink Floyd, I am NOT picking up what you're putting down - even though I should be like the rest of mainstream America and think you're just plain genius.

2.) Steak.  Now, this isn't because I am new vegetarian.  But well before my days as an herbivore, I often ordered chicken or scallops in a steak joint.  That's all I have to say about that.

1.) The Bachelor / Bachelorette / Bachelor Pad.  I have never seen an episode.  I don't understand the whole concept of dating a bunch of people at once and finding the love of your life, and then proposing to someone you barely know.  I suppose that's part of the allure - the drama caused by such rash decisions.  However, it's something I just can't buy into, and I almost feel like a pop culture failure as a result.

So tell me - what are some of YOUR guilty aversions?  Is there anything you are embarrassed to admit you DON'T like?

  1. Chinese food. Everyone tells me I'm insane. But I don't like it. It's the texture. It grosses me out. Ew ew ew. We had Chinese with my folks the other night and I had pizza, lol.

P.S. Party at my place on the 25th =-) You could come!

  2. Oh man, those are some good ones. I'm not a huge fan of steak either to be quite honest. I can only indulge on it once in a while :)

P.S. Can you come to Houston so we can go get pedis?

  3. I think Free Bird is the most overrated song ever. I just don't get the obsession with it. This is a fabulous post btw!!

I don't get fancy beers. You bro will shame me for this!! I am not a big beer person to begin with, the taste just doesn't do it for me.

Long distance running. There is nothing that even remotely appeals to me about running a marathon. I am so impressed with those who do, but it has no spot on any life list of mine.

Hmm, I got 3...I am sure I will wake up in the middle of the night with 2 more!! Xoxo

  4. I am totally relating to your feelings about manicures. I bought a gorgeous new nail polish yesterday, a kind of pastel blue-green and I thought I'd photograph it on my fingers. My hands aren't hideous; just short, stubby and a little rough. My mum describes them as 'doing' hands; they're meant for doing things, not looking pretty. As for pedicures, I am so for them. Anyway, after realising my hands are pretty much unphotographable I asked Cam if I could paint one of his fingers with the (not overly feminine) colour and photograph it and he obliged, haha (I ended up painting his whole hand). I always tell him he has hand model's hands, and he has lovely well kept nails. I prefer mine short, and I have a tendency to grossly bite them. It seems I can live vicariously through my boyfriend regarding a few aesthetic things - he also has really long lovely curly hair. I would never have the patience to grow my hair that long (I measured it and it's 80cm long!), and mine is dead straight.

  5. I always assumed I was the only woman in the world to hate manicures! Glad to see you agree!

  6. Agree with the manicures - also massages - so much money, and you don't look any better - you just feel better? Meh! Give me a glass of wine!

  7. I could go on for ever and ever about all of the things I don't like and I wouldn't feel guilty about it :) (that's not true, I already fear the ensuing judgment)

Here is my list of things I don't get:
    1. Will Farrell. No, no I don't think running around in your underpants yelling something or another is funny. Please stop doing that.
    2. Ugg boots. Why yes, I am interested in shapeless footwear that make my legs look stumpy.
    3. Catcher in the Rye Holden Caulfield and all his "GD this" and "GD that", Come on, Holden, have a cookie (or a cupcake:), you'll feel better.
    4. Treme. I wanted to like it so badly but I just... don't.
    5. Jam Bands. Phish, Umphrey's, Widespread, the Dead - you name it I hate it. They also seem to go hand in hand with 'camping.' I don't camp. Pretending to be homeless for a weekend isn't fun for me. I'm pretty sure my own personal hell involves a Groundhog Day like scenario where I repeat 3-day Phish camp-out shows over and over again for eternity - here's hoping God's not a Will Farrell fan!

    Happy Friday

  8. my big one would be ketchup. i hate it! It smells like too much vinegar and is sticky. ewwww. my brother says this makes me un-American.

i also have no desire to watch Jersey Shore. it seems like everyone is into this show, but i won't even try it. i see enough stupid people in real life.

i'm with you on the sports, though i do like a game at fenway, mostly for the atmosphere and helmet ice cream bowls. but i have to admit a sad obsession with the bachelor franchise. it's like a car crash. i can't look away.

    xoxo

  9. I have many of these, cuz I'm a dork.

    1) I don't like massages. I hate them actually.

    2) I find yoga competitive and NOT relaxing, and I hate downward dog so never go to yoga anymore.

    3) Make up - I don't enjoy it and pretty much never wear it.

    4) Purses - I just grab whatever bag I can find. Usually my sisters. It rarely matches my outfit.

    5) Stupid movies - like 40 Year Old Virgin. I don't know what's wrong with me, but I don't find them funny.

    6) Dancing and dance clubs and clubs in general and bars. HATE THEM ALL. I never went to a single dance in high school. Not even prom. No thank you.

Ok - I'll end it there. Hope schools going well!

  10. My husband hates Pink Floyd too! I never could understand that one. And I cannot stand any of those Bachelor(ette) shows either, so you are not alone.

    Let's see...aversions that I hate to admit...

    1. Sex and the City. I feel like I should love it because like all other women do, but I really don't. I just think it's okay.

    2. Fruit. I HATE fruit. I can't swallow it without gagging. It's not so much a taste thing as it is a texture thing.

    3. Classic literature. It makes me feel stupid.

    4. Romantic comedies. I think romance is cheesy. There are only a couple movies that I have ever liked. I'd much rather watch a horror film.

    5. The Grateful Dead. Kill me.

  11. -Lily Pulitzer (not my style, at all)

    -RHOwherever (sorry!)

-Conan (I just don't think he's that funny!)

I know have more, but the brain is a little slow today. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  12. Yep, I don't like steak either... every time someone orders it I ask for a small little bite, just to see if I've acquired the "taste" for it yet. Meh... not that great in my opinion!! ;-)

    Have a great weekend!!

  13. I'm not a fan of pink floyd either! As for the real housewives that's definitely one of my guilty Pleasures as well.

  14. The creepy kids from The Wall totally freak me out, too! But I do love me sports! I watch baseball and football on TV...I know I am weird :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Agreed. I don't like any of these things, either! I can tolerate steak, but it's not my main choice ever. And Pink Floyd? What's all the hype? Seriously?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Good one!! Hmmm... let me see RockStars, Chipotle and the show Flipping Out. Give me these three things and I'm on happy camper!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. oooh, I have so many. I watch far too much TV...but there could be worse things, right? :)

  18. Interesting...aversions...hmmmm...

    1. The Rolling Stones. Yuck.
    2. Pepperoni pizza.
    3. Dressing up. HATE. IT.
    4. Coffee, or anything mocha. I just don't get it.
    5. Sex. I know, I know, but I just absolutely can't stand it.

  19. I LOVE these shows also, dont feel bad :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I love this post!!! I'm with you on all the guilty pleasures and a few of the aversions too :)

I think mine would include Football {I'm a huge hockey fan so I can't say professional sports in general :)}, chocolate cake, Family Guy, Uggs and beer.

  21. Thanks for finding my blog fellow Chicago blogger!

I love this post. I ALWAYS mess up my manicure within 5 minutes, so I don't even bother anymore. And I completely agree with you on Pink Floyd!

    ReplyDelete
  22. New to your blog- I love it. Couldn't agree more about mani/pedi's! I hate wasting the time and money on a manicure because I always have super short nails and the polish smudges within seconds of leaving the salon!

    ReplyDelete
  23. heart you for #1. i LOATHE the bachelor/ette shows. they flippin SUCK!!! also not a huge fan of manis. pedis, yes. mani, i just don't get.

as for me, my greatest aversion is for cupcakes. i know you love then but they make me barf. a lot.

  24. omg! i like the guilty aversions idea. lemme see... i dislike a lot of the iphone, ipad, and mac computers. i think mostly because people talk to highly of it and it's just gotten to a point where i'm like "okay enough already, i know it's great, but it's not like i can afford it so shut up" lol.

i stay away from tv shows like jersey shore. it drives me nuts to see people wasting away watching useless stuff like that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. i'm embarrassed to admit that i don't like strawberries. i wish i did because they're so pretty and because pretty much everyone in the world (except me) loves them, but alas...

  26. I'm going to steal this for a post. I'll totally link back to you. So stay tuned for that. ;)

  27. This is another good one! I am with you 100% on Pink Floyd. I never got it. My husband is a huge fan and tried to convert me. He gave up and realized it wasn’t going to happen.

This is something I’m going to have to think about. I know that there are definitely some things most people are into that I’m not. None are coming to mind right now!

Thanks for making my day!
